I have a 1977 115 evinrude. The powerhead was just replaced. Timer base was replaced at a local shop and I was told that she fires fine. While trying to start it takes forever but will not power up. I checked the plugs while trying to fire her up and they were pretty wet. The carbs have been rebuilt ( I am redoing them again as I post jsut to make sure ) the floats are set level while holding carbs upside down. I rebuilt the fuel pump. I need some Ideas. Thanks in advance.

Re: Help

Fireman...are you saying it does start after a long cranking period or it doesn't start at all...referencing "but will not power up".

I'd go back and check the individual sparks...they need to jump a 7/16" gap with a hot thick white spark.....lightening like.

Make sure the choke plates close all the way when the choke switch is engaged. Try some premix in a spray bottle when you try and start it. Shoot some premix into the carb throats. Then try and start. If it don't fire, I'd look at the ignition system for no/weak spark.

What's compression like?

Re: Help

The tech at the shop told me that the compression was 90 on all four cylinders also said all is firing well...I did get it running though...It does seem to be flooding a little because when starting it takes the motor a while to throttle up to a high idle. While running the lake I can max throttle at about 4700 rpm if the tach is correct....How do i increase this to 5500 rpm? I still havent set the timing will this effect the rpm.

Re: Help

Do a link and sync according to the manual and that should take care of everything unless it is a fuel delivery problem.

Re: Help

I did the link and sync...There is still a little hesitation while throtteling up...I ran her up to 5200 rpm but ran out of room. Of course thats fast enough for me gotta take it easy on the old girl. idle seems to be a little low.. The idle adjust screw does not come in contact with anythig so i got to work on that.

Re: Help

Honestly, it sound like the engine is worn out. Loading up(flooding) at idle/low speed... the throttle cable adjusted so it doesn't reach the idle speed stop... When idling does it spit raw fuel into the lake? ( looks like oil rings on the water )

If this is the case, you may be in need of pistons/rings/cylinder work. The outboards lose their idle quality first. The "hi speed" is the last to suffer.
