EEwww. It looks like they have been glassed-in. Is there rot in or around the boxes? If not, (and if it were mine), i wouldn't mess with them. Measure them, and get seats to fit the eexisting boxes,or build around them.
You could square-up the area between them, glass the edges of the existing deck, then cut a piece to fit. You could make a hatch there, to stow spare props and tools in the bilge. You will Also have to install and glass-in stringers for the sides, and share the bulkheads (half-n-half) with the existing decking. Those bulkheads look like they got some rot too,or is that just water marks?
I just took another look...Big picture..I got a hammer just like that! It looks like that side must be ripped out??
eww. You might be able to take a dremmel with a cutting blade, and cut the glass all the way around, then take that hammer and bust it out. The center of the box looks higher than the actual deck in the photo. Is it? If so,it may be screwed into the decking under the glass.
Is this a Bayliner? (just curoius, becuase the construction looks like Bayliner at the boxes and the real well).
At any rate, when you get done, send my hammer back to me. LOL

You've definitely got your work cut out for you-so to speak. :D . A sawzall used carefully does wonders. All those coaming pieces are just bolted to the sides and back.Just reach in there, carefully (probably rough fg etc.) and remove the nuts holding them in place at probably around 3'intervals.Naturally the carpet should rip right out, but will probably leave a mess behind. From the photo it looks like the stringer system is totally gone.

CHAINSAW! I know this sounds strange, but I have done this, Just be careful as you near the sides of the boat as the plywood is glassed directly to the hull.

I tried the normal tools, grinders, and saws and found it extremely tedious. You will hear and feel it when the bar hits solid fiberglass. As far as the boxes go, just score the glass around the boxes with the chainsaw.

When you get to the floor, cut out large sections between the stringers, then manually remove the strip still attached to stringer (if you are saving the stringer)

Do the work outside, wear saftey glasses and a mask. When using a chainsaw beware that the bar can kick back towards you, so keep your arm muscles tense and dont cut anywhere that you dont understand what is beneath the surface, gas tanks, glass hull etc.

Finally, use the oiler just like for cutting wood, plan on a dull chain or two, try not to overheat the chain (turns blue) I know this sounds crazy, but it makes quick easy work out of this kind of project. Good Luck

Re: here is my winter project

ok the strongers are fine un touched by rot or mold.
the boxes are glassed in.

it is a bayliner

there is no rot on the sides, the deck goes to the middle of the boxes then it is hull.

there was a trap door in the middle of this mess but the edges of that door are where the rot started.

the hamer
i went to cal and borrowed it for ever from you there 12f you will you will need to come to utah to get it back.

i think that i will be using a feramic disk attached to my die grinder and take the time to do it right.

i'll go out and take some better pictures of this project so you all can see the stringers and the boxes.

the pass side box has rotted out on the inside closest to driver seat. the drivers side is intact.
ill try to get some good ones.
louis

Yuck! I can't quite make complete sense of your plan but I'd just cut everything out down to the hull and stringers, You can make another seat box with plywood in a jiffy and you're going to be an expert at glassing by the time your done here.

Try an old circular saw with an old blade or disc set to the exact depth of the old floor (glass fibres can be very hard on your new saw). If you're really nervous set the blade depth slightly less than the required cut and then go over it with a grinder to finish the cut. Once you've cut part of the the floor out you should be able to break away the excess. Nothing else will be as precise as a circular saw where you can sit it flat.

On the bright side, if it's a bayliner they probably skimped on the glass and the floor should come out real easy.

Good luck

Re: here is my winter project

One of the neat things about the chainsaw is it doesnt like to cut thick fiberglass, if you are too deep or accidently hit the hull you hear the noise of the wide blades bouncing off the solid glass, with virtually no damage done, as opposed to a saw blade or grinder which can happily cut through the hull without warning.

Mrno, This is a big job no matter how you slice it, maybe you can just patch the bad areas of the floor and call it good, I would probably use a circular saw and grinder if I were to patch, rather than replace the floor.

Re: here is my winter project

Ya, 12footer I had to replace the transom on a boat once, I removed the top half of boat, then started digging away at the plywood transom, the rotted stuff came out easily but alot of the wood was still in good shape. It was going so slow! Out of desperation I fired up the saw. That wood was gone in 20 minutes and the outer glass shell perfectly preserved.

As I reached the floor surface I realized that I needed to remove solid wood about 1 1/2" thick to about 6" max depth beneath the floor at the center of boat and progressively less from that point (a very narrow work area) I call it the transom pocket. That saw just wiped it out in no time, with absolutley no damage to the bottom of boat.

I found out later that the boat was waterlogged, so I had to remove the whole floor, another piece of cake with the chainsaw.

P.S. Olympic Boats also does not fully encapsulate the stringers!

Re: here is my winter project

well...........
hummmph
the floor needs to come out the foam under is soaked after a week of being open in the garage on the two sides(between the
stringers and the sides)
as for the front of the boat i the floor was replaced poorly in the past and is going to need to be attended to also. the stringers are fully incapsulated in glass. as i have said they are in mint condition.

i am going to replace the whole floor with marine grade plywood. after seeing the difference there is between the two on this craft i think it would the wiser. if anything in the end i will have a new boat feeling on the inside.

i can say that they didn't skimp on the glass that is for shure. and i think your right i will be very proficent at laying glass when this is all done. i belive that the circular saw may be the best idea yet i have alot of old blades that i said i would go sharpen and bought new instead. :)
we will try to poast a pic before bed.
louis
