I run ficht oil in my 1999 Johnson 90hp. When I troll I get alot of smoke. No more or less than the next guy. I am tired of operating my boat under the influence of 2 stoke oil smoke. If I switch to a synthetic, not any Amsoil procucts, will I have less smoke and will I be sacraficing protection. Also I use the oil injection system. Pensoil seams to be pretty reasonably priced any suggestions on brand of oil. Please unbiased opinions only I don't want any sales pitches as I have been doing alot of reading about this topic already and have noticed alot of Amsooil pushers.

Pennzoil 100% Synthetic and your smoking will be reduced and you will suffer NO reduced protection either with corrosion or wear.

You just need to run you oil down pretty low and then add the Pennzoil, or you can remove and dump your resevior out and add the new oil, You will see the change sooner. Remember , you need to suck the oil out of your resevior under the cowling also with something like your wifes turkey baster also and refill it and purge the air.. Oh, dont put it back in the drawer when youre done.

There, I didnt mention A***** once!

Re: Here we go with synthentic vs dyno

Thanks alot. I did talk to a reputable outboard wrench today. He is a friend of mine who will tell me the truth about things. He recomended Amsoil. I think I am going to try it. Should I use the HP or the High performance stuff, not sure on the name. Also lube dude could you explain how I will get 200 more RPM. That would equal more speed, but I would be at 5700 RPM at WOT the manuel says it should be at 5500 RPM at WOT. Would I run into problems with the motor if it is over reved. Thanks in advance.

bJOHNSON

L D will get back with his recommendation I'm sure, but that 200rpms won't hurt the motor any. After using this stuff would you get back and give us an unbiased opinion, and let us know how much you gained in rpms with only an oil change...just a thought :)

Re: Here we go with synthentic vs dyno

Thing are different with different set ups, hulls engine hight, props, etc.

From my personal experiences, I have seen from no improvement at all to as much as 300 RPM gains if you change over the lower unit and the engine at the same time.

My merc 150 gained 2-300 RPM.

My recomendation is to do a good decarb, maybe twice, Change the plugs and take your boat out and take #s, RPM, speed, (GPS) if available, Maybe you could borrow one. Then change the lower unit oil to a synthetic, I used Amsoil of course, Then change out the engine oil, Use the HP Injector oil, even if you premix. Now take the boat out and run it for a good 30 minutes to make sure you have the new oil in there. Then take #s again. Honestly, It seems that it will take a few trips before you will see even better improvements. I do not know why this is but it seems to be that way.

I too an interested in (Unbiased) reports.

I have been mostly involved in Bass Boats, and the best improvments are with very good hulls and engines that are set up on the edge, so I dont know if you will see the same results or not, but you should see some slight gains.

I changed to Amsoil in the motor and lower unit 2 years ago and I had a 200 RPM increase. At sea level, I can reach 6,000 RPM's with just me in the boat. Here is a picture of my boat.

I have another picture of the motor from inside the boat looking back at speed coming. Looks real good.

Craig

The OEM ficht oil is an excellent oil specifically designed for that outboard.

The smoke you're experiencing when trolling could be unburned fuel, or a sign your engine needs work. Smoke at troll isn't uncommon for that outboard.

If you're seeing rpm gains from using Amsoil its due to the fact you de-carbed first, and changed the LU oil to a lower viscosity. Changing the injection oil from OEM Ficht to Amsoil will not yield a 5% increase in rpm.

Welcome to the board "TheOilDoc". There's a wealth of information here, mostly good stuff written qualified people. Don't get discouraged if you get some flak on your first post, most of us here would agree with your statements, but oil related question just seem to get argumentative here. :)

Nope, I have a hunch its and old member that I have had odds with in the past trying to sneek in as "Theoilman". Ill find out, I have spys. :D

He wouldnt have to change his name, just not be so obnoxious and we could work together on things, But NNNOOOOOOOO. If not, then I can live with another oil guy, I can allways learn something new.

Its just oil. :D

Lubedude before making accusatory posts to new members, please email us mods with your suspicions and we will check out IP addresses.

TheOilDoc, we have had many ongoing sessions regarding oil and the issue seems to send everyone into a tailspin. Not knowing the history, you couldn't have realized that you stepped into some sensitive territory.

We appreciate all the knowledge our members have to offer from both sides however, we prefer to leave the oil wars to our country's leaders.

Definatly not a problem, but you have to admit whoever this guy is, he jumped right in trying to cause trouble, Not so much here as the other post in the other thread.

Like I stated, He is "VERY" welcome as long as he keeps his manners. Like I previosly stated, Im willing to learn something too if in fact he has some knowledge to post.
