Yesterday around 5 p.m. a buddy and I roll up to the launch for some fishing. It is a single lane launch and there is a boat in front of us prepping. So we pull in behind them to do the same.

I look down the hill to see if anyone is launching and there is a pick-up parked at the bottom and a guy on a jet ski just taking off. I figure someone else was in the truck and would be pulling out soon.

Well there WAS someone in the truck, his wife/girlfriend, but she was sitting in the passenger side and had no plans of moving the truck. So for the next 10 minutes we watch this guy zip around the lake, back and forth, until he finally comes back in.

As he walks up the ramp he obviously notices how angry everyone standing there is, so he asks "are you guys trying to launch your boat"?

Uh..no genius. We just pulled them down here so we could sit around and watch your awesomeness on your damn jet ski. No worries!

I think I would have used that 10 minutes to give her a lecture on ramp etiquette. I can just hear it..."If you leave me in that position again, I'm gonna (insert verb)

I can understand why you would be upset! I would be P!$$ed! lol that being said, believe me, it's not just the PWC owners that do this sorta crap. My favorite is when someone unloads their boat, then sits at the courtesy dock and try for 15-20min to get it started... all the while, there's a line of people forming to launch their boats while these morons still have their trucks sitting on the ramp.

Uh..no genius. We just pulled them down here so we could sit around and watch your awesomeness on your damn jet ski. No worries!

And I do have to thank you for this line!! I read this thread originally this morning soon after you posted it.. gave me a good gut laugh lol

The right thing to do was to politely ask the GF to drive the trailer out of the way and if she declined, to offer to do it for her. Just up to the top. say, "I'm sure your BF thought no one would be coming down while he tested his ski and would have moved it himself if he had ." (points out the problem; describes it as a mistake instead of intentional act of assholedness)

if that didn't work, then ramp up the pressure. Like start hooking up tow ropes to her vehicle.

As for "he asks "are you guys trying to launch your boat"?: HERE'S YOUR SIGN!

There are circumstances where it is OK to leave a trailer on the ramp for a short time while testnig the boat, etc. but only if you are either certain no one is coming, or have someone to move it immediately if they do. And anyone can drive a vehicle with an empty jet ski trailer straight up a ramp (except the clutch impaired, I guess).

I got one better, I assure you.

Ever watch someone try to launch their camper? Yeah.

I pulled up to the ramp yesterday, lane 2 dude was struggling backing up with a jetski. Apparently, lane 1 dude was helping lane 2 dude... But he drove his suburban and hi/lo camper up to the boat launch, and parked it so no one else could use either lane. I parked in such a fashion that he had to back his camper down the ramp, I don't think he hit the water, but he had to be close.

I had a buddy that used to say "Everyone's an a** except for me and you... and I'm not so sure about you." It seems to really be true at the boat launch. It's such a 'me' society these days. It's just unreal. No one cares about anyone else...

I think if you discriminate against a certain 'category' of vessel you do a disservice to boating in general. Aholes come in all colors shapes & sizes. Don't much matter what kinda watercraft they operate?

Seriously. Hating blowboaters or kayakers or PWCs or SUPs or go-fasts or poontoons is just what the powers that be want us to do. Divide and conquer. Be smarter.

I would love for some of the negative attitude toward jet skis to come to my neck of the woods for a wile.

You can have all the fun you want till you see there badge. Yes the fish and game guys ride them even have a mount for there ticket book.

Yes I am one of those that think the waters are safer and more fun with them around.

Amen. The situation in the first post was all about the trailer and not about the boat. In fact, it's better to test out a smaller craft at the ramp than some big pig that takes a half hour to pull out!

I do now & will allways hate SUPs, they ruined surfing (Well Gidget started it, the SUPs just finished it off.)

I would have pulled my rig directly in front of his truck so that he could not have moved and then went about respooling a few of my reels, rearranging my tackle and waited for him to ask me to move....Then...I would have let him know how unhappy I was about him blocking the ramp...and that I hope to see his truck blocking the ramp again one day.

Well to tell the truth I like boats that go fast. All that other crap gets in the way. Was just trying to be nice ...

I had an old timer tell me it was Frankie Avalon & Annette Fellacio who ruined surfing. Or mebbe it was the Beach Boys. I cain't never 'member which ...? Please advise

I really get a laugh when people are trying to back down the ramp and the can't do it to save their life. On Monday we watch 2 different jetski owners fail terribly. One set of meatheads would jack knife their trailer and then stop lift it up and straighten it out and do it all over again. While it was starting to rain. And the line was so long. No one was mad but just told them to come back after they learn how to back down the ramp. And the other one when we were all done I unhooked his trailer and walked it over to the ramp then backed his honda civic down to hook it up. This ramp was not near as steep as the others around so he could do it easily.

Re: Here's a good reason why so many have grudges against PWC owners...

When I got back out on the lake for the first time in probably 8 years or so I realized I'd turned into my grandfather. He raised me, taught me all I knew about boats, camping, tying knots, starting a camp fire, getting an engine to run and keeping it running, etc. etc. etc. Sometime between 30 and 40 it hit. :D

We were cruising around enjoying the lake last spring and every time a PWC or jet boat went zipping by with no regard to anyone else I had the uncontrollable desire to wave my fist at them and yell "DAMN KIDS" ... after discussing this with my wife and friends we all got a good laugh about it.

But really do they not get the fact that people want to chill and fish and drop anchor and what not and may not want a speedway 20 feet away from them?

Re: Here's a good reason why so many have grudges against PWC owners...

Its ironic that I should read this post now... Last night I went to unload my boat at a private ramp. Its well posted that its private and a pass is required, but it turns out that someone without a pass decided to unload his boat, but left the truck on the ramp, trailer still in the water. After about 10-15 minutes of waiting around, and not seeing anyone in the bay, I gave the ramp owner a call... 15 minutes later a tow truck shows up, and just as they are getting ready to tow him, along comes this fisherman with maybe around early 2000's lund.

Anyway, the marina owners and himself had a couple words, I unfortunately was too far away to hear them, but he did not leave happy.

The funny part is that this isn't the first time this has happened, and amazingly I've never had a problem with PWC's at ramps, only fisherman. Its usually the sparkly boat guys who have more money than brains, at least this was a sensible boat this time around.
