i have a 1989 sea ray powered by a 7.4l bravo one carburated engine.the engine was recently rebuilt and operates with good power and acceleration once underway.the problem is that, after warmup at idle, the engine hesitates upon accelerating-sometimes dying and other times waiting several seconds before kicking in.any ideas on why and/or how to fix?

Howdy,

It sounds like a carburetor problem.

either automatic choke mal-adjustment or the accelerator pump is not pumping enough fuel during power up.

Re: hesitation at acceleration

Question about the rebuild . . . after the rebuild, did the engine hesitate, or did it run properly for a while, then the hesitation occurred?

I agree that it's possibly a carb problem; but, it can also be your distributor. Check the that weights move freely and that the springs aren't weak or broken. The weights change the timing as the engine accelerates. It's not uncommon on marine engines for there to be a problem with the distributor. A distributor overhaul is rather simple and straight-forward, and probably should have been done when the engine was rebuilt. So check your carb and check your distributor. One of them is probably at fault. Hy

thanks for the comments.i will recheck accelerator pump operation.the hesitation occurred since the rebuild.the distributor is part of a thunderbolt IV ignition which advances the timing electronically.the engine runs fine after clearing start up.
