Got a 89 sunbird with a 4.3 omc. When it's in neutral and shift it in to forward,it shifts fine, then when it goes from idle to lil gas it stutters a lil bit then clears up and goes. But when I bring it back to idle then give it gas it doesn't stutter. Only when I go from neutral to forward and start to give it gas............doesn't sound like my carburator. Any ideas? Thanks for ur time!

Re: Hesitation

Could be the ESA. It is made to ground out the ignition (stuttering) to allow gears to be shifted. Maybe your switch is out of adjustment and stays engaged too long?

On second thought, the ESA is designed to pull the drive out of gear, not to put it in to gear. The gears themselves are cut to hold themselves engaged and do not want to disengage while the drive is under load.. That being said, I would still check the engagement of the ESA to make sure it is not the cause of your issue.

I don't think you can, The ESA is explained in a sticky on the top of this thread forum. I have read it a couple of times, I understand it, but can't explain it.

Re: Hesitation

normally, any off idle to cruise hesitation is caused by a faulty acceleration pump on the carb. As you push on the gas, the carb goes from the idle circuit to the cruise circuit, the acceleration pump cover this transition with an extra squirt of gas - if the pump is bad or leaking, the engine will stumble until it can open the cruise circuits in the carb... it's the first place I would look. You can check it by removing the flame arrestor and look down the venturies, then push down on the pump arm for the accelerator pump, you should see a strong shot of gas with no air or bubbles

Normally a hesitation caused by the ESA would be going in to, or out of gear, not after it is already in gear and you are just trying to accelerate. If you think it is the ESA, just have someone do what causes the the problem with the shifter, and you watch and see if the ESA shift interrupter cocks over when the problem occurs. If it does, then most likely you have a failing lower shift cable, and it needs to be replaced

But honestly, I think it's the carb...

It's probably just my pea-brain not firing properly, but I can't find the ESA explanation. Do you have a link to it?

I too think it is the carb, because the overstroke switch prevents the ESA from activating when in gear. I just rebuilt my carb, and wow! what a difference!
