The title pretty much sums up the conversation I had with my 10yr. old (well, turns 10 July 14th), a few minutes after I got home from work... He brings a bag of Jack Links peppered beef jerky over to me, and says "Hey dad, you want some of my jerky?".. Me, being the jerky lover that I am (seriously, I've been known to eat bags of the stuff in one sitting lol), I say Heck yeah! Thank you!.. So, after eating a few pieces, I ask him if he liked it or not? He says yeah, he does, but it's really hot!... I tell him, Yeah, that's what peppered means, but it is a bit gritty..... As I pop another piece in my mouth, he proceeds to tell me that it wasn't that hot when he first opened it, but since he added some hot spices to it, it is a lot hotter!..... As I stop mid-chew and look at him, I say "What...do you mean... you put spices on it??"..... He say's, yeah dad, it came with a little bag of spices to sprinkle on it!.. Son, were these "spices" in a little white pouch inside the jerky bag when you opened it?... "Yeah".... uhhhh, buddy, we have been sitting here eating silica 'spices' on our jerky.... too which I get a blank stare... "Son, Silica is a type of sand they put in these bags, so that it keeps moisture out of the bag so the jerky doesn't get ruined..." As I kinda giggle and look at my wife, who at this time is almost purple from laughing so hard, My son asks me if he's going to poop out a beach now...
Sorry for the long story, but thought ya'll might need a laugh, and those of you with kids will understand.. haha
(P.S. don't worry, the silica beads they put in food products is NOT actually harmful as the pouch says, it's actually just a form of sand.. the "Harmful" warning is due to it being a choking hazard and the company's doin a little CYA)
