I was told by my Marine Mechanic ( 25 years under his belt )to mix it 50:1 on my old TD-20, 1946-49
5 hp Outboard Johnson Seahorse.
But what I've seen on here I should be mixing 24:1.
What do you think?

Re: Hey JB, 50:1 or 24:1

The TD-20 has several sleeve (friction) bearings.

OMC specified 24:1 for all engines made before 1964. This can translate to all engines that are not 100% frictionless (ball or needle) bearings.

Many believe that modern TC-W3 oils are better lubricants than the SAE-30 used back in those days. They are, but they don't protect sleeve bearings any better.

Some get away with using 50:1 in the old engines, some don't. I wont recommend it.

Use 24:1.

Good luck. :)

Definitely run it at 24:1. JB's right on the money about the bronze bearings needing extra oil to live happily. Any mech who tells you to run 50:1 is looking at selling you a newer motor down the road...
- Scott
