If you are curious about history, I was surfing yesterday and wound up on you tube with about 5 movies covering the history of Mercury engines. Really interesting. Thing is, I remember reading newspapers covering some of the events, like their 24,000 mile endurance test of the "Tower of Power" to prove the reliability and their Lake X testing facility where they tried to kill the engines. Just Google History of Mercury Marine-you tube.

Mark - have you ever read "Iron Fist" by Jeffrey Rodengen? It details the endurance test and the behind the scenes shenanigans that went on during the test. Great read!

No sir I haven't but I have seen You-tube testing of the engines on Lake X (and remember news covering such) back when the tower first came out and they looked pretty real to me. After watching a few of those, it became apparent why Merc added shock absorbers to their engines before the advent of PTT.

As a young lad, we were poor and to just have an engine to put on a rental boat was a blessing or whatever. I was using daddy's Scott Atwater 10 hp. (which he bought because it had "Bail-a-matic" to bail your boat) and got tired of Mercs, with the same stated hp, running circles around me.

Later on in life, 1972, I was running OMC's best V4 and the "Tower" Mercs with the red band with 125 decals on the cowl, just like my OMC had, ran circles around me again.

I moved to the badge later and haven't deviated.

I ordered the book over the summer and couldn't put it down! Learned a lot about Carl, a very interesting man that made great products.
