Hey new here and need some help

i have a 71 or 72 Mercury 20HP tiller handle with the gear lever on the side. Went out yesterday and there is no forward or reverse. when the motor isn't running it seems to go into gear but nothing when its running. Please any advise will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the hub in the prop is slipping

Thanks for the answer but im a little ignorant to outboard motors what is the hub on the prop and how would inspect this. the motor ran find last time out in Oct.

Remove the prop and front thrust hub and it the rubber part left in the prop, some cases it's hard to tell if it's been slipping and you must mark the inner splined part on the hub and the outer aluminium part of the hub on the prop then test run to see if they have moved.
