Do you know anybody around eastern NC that would have a good used drive bell housing for an 1974 888 mercruiser? It measures 7-1/16" across the ears. I need to replace mine and was frightened by the cost of a new one.
Thanks

Re: Hey Rodbolt ?

Rodbolt,
Thanks for your help. I found one pretty cheap from a guy in Florida.

I just recently recieved a link from Don-S on another topic I had, the link was for a mercruiser service manual. In the manual, regarding the topic on bell housing service, I noticed a statement referring to "bellows adhesive", stating to use it but allow it to dry...........and so on. When I purchased my bellows from my local mercruiser dealer, I asked them about this bellows adhesive and they said not to use it, that the bellows surface should be completely dry or the bellows would slide off during use. Should I remove the bellows and apply this adhesive or leave them dry fit like I have them??

Re: Hey Rodbolt ?

beats me. I never tried it. I alweays follow the service manual. if it calls for adhesive it gets it if it does not it doesnt. I see dealers and techs all the time that have done it 20 years and 20 years they done it wrong. I see techs with 10,000 dollar tool boxes that easter egg trouble shooting cause they have no clue how it works but are secure in the knowledge that with enough parts the proplem will be solved. you would not belive how many CDI and ECU's I have seen replaced when the cause was a loose connection but the diagnoistics said it was a computer. its funny to see the look on a techs face when he just installed a 1400 dollar ECU and the proplem is still there.

Rodbolt, are you saying that you never tried using bellow adhesive? I know my manual calls for it, but the local mercruiser repair shop said they never used it.

what I am trying to say is I am currently or have been certified in volvo, mercrusier, mariner, force, mercury, yamaha and tohatsu and suzuki. most my work for several years was OMC. its way to much to remember at an advancing age. so I always consult the manual. RTFM. always.
