Once I read your profile, I felt you knew what you were talking about rather than just yakin. I thought back concerning the last few minutes on my last outing which was pretty hot and I had been running long enough for the interior of the cowl (engine) to develop significant heat. Maybe I just had a quasi vapor lock or something.
I thought about what I did when I rolled my boat out a couple of days ago and as I said the first thing I did was to tweak the interconnect linkage between the three carbs as one butterfly was a few degrees off the rest at WOT and I want to pick up that extra half mile plus to get over 50 gps.
In the process I noticed that due to wear, the plastic parts that the SS, S shaped rod that connects the carb butterfly cam to the rest of the linkage mounts (the little round hootus's that the rod snaps into) were worn and allowing slack in the WOT throttle position.
In short, after our morning correspondence I paid particular attention to the closure comment you made about the butterflys and upon releasing the carb linkage from the cam (loosened the screw that adjusts the mating Carb roller to butterfly cam) I realized that as you said the carbs weren't closing completely.
I refocused my carb linkage energy toward ensuring that closure was complete and even and would have to let WOT fall where it fell.
After doing that I fired it off and after a short period of pfarting and snorting (getting the goo out of the cylinders that accumulated during the problem, it idled like a top. Rpm's were below 1000 and steady as a rock. Raising the fast idle lever up through 3k was smoothe as silk and solid as a rock.
When you said I was headed in the wrong direction yes I was and my hat is off to you for your initial comments. You knew what you were talking about and I salute you.
