Well we have finally upgraded from our little dingy & 4.5hp merc to an 19' Invader 17v Sport with a 150 v6 merc. We bought it at auction for only 1k, but they said everything worked fine 8) they always say that! It came with no information on either the engine or boat but it did come with instructions on the depth finder too bad they were ruined :'(. I have done my research (as much as I could) on the boat and motor and depth finder but alas I still have a few questions (btw I did buy a repair manual on the motor). The boat is really solidly built hardly any fading and no damage to the hull or interior the engine hours only show 176 hours! All the controls seem to work, the bilge pump works just fine. I had to work a little on the trim hydralics(sp) because they were stuck and wouldn't lift the engine, but I fixed them8). When I finally figured out how to get the engine casings apart I was able to look at the engine (boy what a difference from a car engine). I pulled the plugs they all looked good no rust and just a little carbon (cleaned them). Starter was a little gooped up when I tried to start it, it wouldn't engage the flywheel so I used a little WD on it and that was able to free it up. Btw I had earmuffs on the water intake. Took only 3 trys to get it started and it idled just fine, a little rough but I just chalked it up to old/bad gas (a little stabalizer should bring it back). Whew what a story:$! Bear with me please, I'll get to the questions it a few seconds. So I read in my book to check the gear oil in the lower unit and it looked good (used engine oil looking). So all in all it looks like everything was just serviced before it got stored who knows how long ago.

Now you know the history, so heres the questions:

1) If anyone has any information on where I could get the orginal manuals on the boat, please let me know.

2) On the console there it this switch that goes up and down (like the rest of them) it has ACC on the top and bottom. What does that stand for?

3) I cannot for the life of me find out what year the engine is the serial number is 6133060. Also there is no actual markings that say its a 150hp, I read that on the engine that it was a 150hp, all the outside says is that its V6 Hi Performance Mercury.

4) When I had the earmuffs on the engine I had run it with just the throttle on (no gear) for about 30secs. I did not see any water coming out of the tell tattle. Is that because it did not get hot enough to open the thermostats? Or do I have a water pump problem?

Thanks for reading my story and questions. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

If you do not know how long it has been sitting or its history then change the impeller "just because" small cost compared to a fried motor. Check the pee hole is not blocked byusing a piece of weed whacker line. Personally I would service the whole cooling system, change the lower unit oil and change the spark plugs before continuing.
Good luck with it and why don't you post a few photos of your new to you outfit. The real experts out here will tell you all you need to know. Try to find more numbers/leters on your motor to help with the I/D of it.

Change the lower unit lub since you have no idea how long its been in there. Get rid of the god only knows how old gas. Adding stabilizer does not bring gas back from the the dead. Install new plugs. Cleaning plugs is a waste of time. Before you run it again, as was suggested, replace the water pump impeller. Wait until you get it apart and can inspect the housing. If its scored, replace the entire pump. When you get it running, run SeaFoam or Engine Tuner in the fuel to clean up the fuel system. A compressioin check followed by a decarb operation would be in order as well. Check the Frequently Asked Questions for the decarb procedure.

One thing you'll notice is sparkplug burning. In a car, a clean sparkplug is a good thing. In an outboard, a clean sparkplug indicates a problem. Ideal deposits are dark brown, slightly damp-looking.

Replace all of the gas and pre-mix with oil at 50:1 until you know your oil system is working. It never hurts for the first run in the season anyhow.

Definately do the water pump. Your motor won't pee til the thermostats start opening up, that's normal. New thermostats should have little notches in the caps to allow a little trickle. Or you can drill a tiny hole in the thermostat flange.

Realize that you are moving from a tricycle to a Corvette. Take your time. Full Throttle is not mandatory, contrary to popular belief. ;)

Thanks all for your advice! Especially about the plugs, I know a ton about car engines old and new but Im a virgin with marine engines. Thanks again!
