Hi output alternator problems

Last year I repowered my 27' sport fisherman with two new Crusader Power Pack 5.7L inboards. These engines are the new GM Vortec model. The Power Packs do not come with new alternators; you are supposed to reuse the old ones. I wanted to change to a new high output alternator from the stock 65-70 amp model.

I ordered new 150 amp alternaters from a company I thought was a marine specialist. After two exchanges, I got the right mount with the right wires and installed them. Right away my volt meters were pegged above 16 volts at cruising RPM's. All season I was getting over voltage alarms from the electronics and my batteries were always dry.

I've lost confidence that I will just get the right thing from this seller, so I've got a lot of questions. They are still under warranty so if I want them fixed for free I've got to use them.

There must be something wrong with the voltage regulators. Should this be a hard problem to fix?

I only had the problem at higher RPM's, is there a difference in the belt speed or pulley diameter between the older GM 5.7L and the newest model?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Hi output alternator problems

Might the 150s require external voltage regulators? I would think that they're built into the alternators, but...

Have you ever switched the battery switches with the motors running? That would typically fry the diode trio resulting in a no charging scenario, but...

The only way to answer the last question would've been to compare the two. I'm not exactly sure what you got.
