I have a 20' runabout with a 4.3l Bravo 2 and would like to upgrade to a High Five 5 blade prop for better performance for waterskiing etc. Any ideas on what size and pitch would be the best? Anyone with one of these props who could give me some advice would be great. Thanks

What do you have now?
Diameter?
Pitch?
RPM at WOT?

You need to provide some more informaion, to eliminate a few variables here.

Re: High Five Prop Selection?

I have the same configuration in my boat and I was running a 22 Pitch 3 blade SS prop. Went down to a 19P 3 Blade aluminum and it still is pretty slow on holeshot. I can still get up to about 45MPH but I don't care about top speed, the wife hates it when I go that fast unless the water is glass which it never is. So I just ordered the 4 blade 18P SS prop here on Iboats, they have them on sale right now for just under 300 bucks. You have to remember that you have a pretty big boat for a 4.3L motor to handle, I looked at the 5 blade props and read all the articles and determined that the 4 blade was probably the better solution for my boat. Trailer Boating magazine had a great article on prop selection last year and they tested all of their props on a 20 Foot runabout with the 4.3 and they also recommended the 4 blade prop in the end.

Re: High Five Prop Selection?

If you are propertly pitched with your current prop, I would advise dropping down to a lower pitch for best hole shot and water sports performance. I have a Cobalt 190 with a 4.3L and use a five blade SS prop by Ron Hill. It provides better hole shot, holds speed in turns better, and can maintain plane at a slower speed (for wakeboarding) than my old 3 blade. I have never had a High Five prop, but I heard on this forum that the Ron Hill (a custom prop builder in California) is better. It is also cheaper than the Merc High Five. Do an ebay search for "five blade propeller" if you want more info (I have no stake in Ron Hill propellers by the way).
