I have a kiekafeer mercury serial #2559253 not sure what year this is but it starts fine it just has a very high idle and seems to progressively get higher until i shut it off.I have backed the idle screw all the way out.The ony thing that seem to change the idle is if I push the distributor towards the idle screw stop then it will come down but I cannot adjust it to that position.

Thanks for any help:)

If it's like my 45hp, there is a throttle link rod on the port side of the motor with an adjustable nut, so you can shorten or lengthen the rod.

Good thought but I have already looked at that and tryed it. It only raises the idle not lower it.I estimate it is idiling at about 1500-1700 rpms on a hose so maybe 1200-1400rpms in the lake but havent got that far yet.Could it have anything to do with the spark advance ( i dont think so) i have that screw all the way out as well.

What you need to perform is called a sync and link. It sets up the ignition timing and carb linkages and will give you the proper idle speed.

Do a search in this forum to find the procedure.

Basscat,
Here's a good link for the sync and link process.

Consider getting a OEM (Mercury repair manual) Still available. A bit pricey but less than the cost of a broke motor. Don't waste your money on anything other than the factory manual. you'll be glad you did.:)

Basscat,
How's your mixture? It's better to run a bit rich. Are you on Muffs? Rev it a bit and see if it improves. Also, you might want to run some Seafoam through it. Maybe one of the big guns here can suggest something better.:)
