High idle on my motor???

Hey guys, I have a '63 75 hp johnny. And I was wondering just how exactly do I go to high idle without engaging the prop? I did it one other time by accident, but have not been able to replicate it since. But that whole story belongs in stupid boating stories. My problem is that my motor does not idle cold very well,so it always dies shortly after I start it up the first time. So I was hoping to avoid this by hitting the throtle to a higher idle. Any ideas?

Some of those controls you pull out then advance the throttle.

Water....is your control OMC (Evinrude/Johnson) of the same year or is it generic like Morse, Teleflex, etc.?

Hi Water-Surge;<br />With that year of an engine you probly have a side mounted control box. If so there will be a small lever on the side of the control box that you simply lift, that will advance the throttle, and timing for starting. This will usually give you a higher throttle than you will need for warm up, lower the lever down to a comfortable speed for warm up.<br />Hope this helps

Yes, this is a Johnson control box. Looks to be about the same year as the motor. there is a forward and reverse lever and a broken off lever for the choke (there is barely anough there for me to move back and forth). Now at the bottom of this box there is a throttle adjust twist nut. Other than that I don't hav eanything else to mov eback and forth or out.
