high idle speed

Good evening everyone!

I have a 71 model 40 hp e'rude (40153g) that I am enjoying IMMENSELY! (as it was free!!). Still have a strange, to me, situation. It idles too high, once again, to me.

I have no tach, no speedo, bare bones. FD model Alumacraft that it is on. Link & Sync is done, carb is fine, no problems with planing, pulling, or troll speed fouling of plugs. But it will NOT idle done as low as my brother's 57 model Johnny. NOwhere near that low. Fuel pump shows no sign of leaking. Only thing I see that I need to attend to is the top crank seal seems to be leaking oil. I am wondering if this is the culprit.

Air leak in any of the little hoses that do the oiling to the top? I replaced 2 best I could one day hoping that the hose I used was sealed enough with the clamps.

I know some of you old salts can steer me right!!

Re: high idle speed

You will want to replace the crank seal as it will destroy your workings under the flywheel. You should be able to adjust your idle with your throttle cable. Use the little wheel where the cable is anchored to adjust it. You might also, with the engine not running, throttle all the way up and watch for a bolt to move and hit a stop. You might have to adjust it to where you want it but do this on the water. .
