High oil pressure

Hi all:

I have a 1948 Crosby with an original YSE\12 Yanmar diesel. I installed a mechanical gauge to get an accurate reading of my oil pressure. It is reading 80 psi at neutral/idle, and drops to 60 to 65 psi in gear.

I thought the bypass valve may have been clogged, but after tracking down a service manual, I have found there is none. In place of an oil filter, these early engines incororated an oil scraper. My oil looks fine.

I am at a loss as to where to go next. Are there any "old timers :) " out there with an intamate knowledge of these little motors?

Re: High oil pressure

You seem to really know what your doing so this probably will not help at all but as no one else has replied and you never know.

1) Is the oil of the correct viscosity?
2) The quick reference guide for YSE/12 shows a washable oil filter see (http://www.yanmar.com.au/qrg/yse-12.pdf)
3) As its so old could the oil passages be partially blocked?

At least if this is no help you know someone cares!

Re: High oil pressure

check the gauge Bubba, the engine is most likely OK..... remove the sender and install a fitting that will accept a mechanical pressure guage. hook it up and it will tell you in 1 second what your pressure is........if your pressure is a little low, it is probably because the engine is 45 years old and never been rebuilt.. in which case you will need to tear it down and have all the working parts machined to fit.............GOOD LUCK

Re: High oil pressure

Here is a rule of thumb a young guy like me follows...

OIL Pressure = Good

To MUCH oil pressure = CAN YOU REALLY EVER
HAVE TO MUCH PRESSURE ????

Not Enough Oil Pressure = Bad Bad news

Might Not help , But if you have More pressure at idle than at Normal opertaion , it might be the Switch. Also check the OIL level Before you turn
on the engine , then again when you run it(any difference?)

Your oil pump would pump less at idle that's pretty much a fact. and when you get the oil flow'n you said it runs about 60psi. That is my favorite Number for Oil Pressure -) 60psi (-

So check the switch , Ever heard of LUCAUS oil?
Find out more about it, It is good for OLD stuff
