hello,

i see alot of yamaha guys adding universal voltage regulators to the outboards and was wondering if the same is possible with mercury - i have a 1988 merc classic fifty (45hp) 4cyl. ,elec start, with only a rectifier - as you know voltage hits 17+ at w.o.t. is there a regulator or ? that i can still in place of the rectifier or even after the rectifier to get the voltage back down . alot is mentioned about the battery needing replaced but thats not rigth because once the battery is full the voltage goes higher and higher . any info appreciated .

Re: high voltage

The short answer is yes.

Mercury makes a voltage regulator to add to the existing rectifier and I'm sure that there is something available in the aftermarket as well

Re: high voltage

thanks tech ,

do you know off hand if it is a vr that installs after the rectifier - i'm somewhat electrically inclined and i figured there must be a way to do it -you wouldn't know the part number ? most dealers i talk to give me the deer in the headlights look and then want to sell me a whole new stator/reg package for 500 bucks ( canadian dollars).

cheers
