Higher pitch prop, MORE rpm's?

I'm wondering if anyone else has had prop pitch anomalies like I'm experiencing. '86 175 on a Hydrostream w/ jackplate. Had a 23p 3 blade SST and could only get 4800 RPM out of it @ about 61mph. Also have a 21p 14.25 3bl SST for tube/wakeboard. That will over rev w/ just 2-3 in the boat @ about 60mph. Just bought a 14.25 22p 3bl SST used from ebay thinking it would be just right but tried it and get only 51mph @ 6000 rpm with more throttle to go. Holeshot is like, or better than my alum 19p. Is there that much of a difference in pitch numbers from manufacturers like there is in shoes - one company's 12 fits but another company's 12 is way to big?

That's exactly right...2 manufacturers props of the same pitch value may not BE the same...not uncommon at all, and who knows that the prop you just got hasn't been worked???
If at all possible, when tuning for a few more, or less RPM, use props of the same manufacturer and blade design.
I know you mean Stainless steel by "SST" (confusing as this is an OMC prop as well), but what manufacturer of props are you testing??

My 23p was a Michagan wheel the others I don't know, no name on them, ebay stuff! There is some signs of machining on the new 22p. Do shops actually re-pitch these props?
