i noticed that my rpms were 300-500 rpms higher. Is my hub starting to slip or is it a bad tach. Any way to tell

thanks

Just mark the fixed part of the hub and the outside of it so you can see. Take it for a spin, and if they don't line up afterward you'll know it's starting to let go.

Somebody told me to put the boat in gear and see if I can move the prop.
I gave it a try and I was able to move it about 1/2 inch with pressure. Is that a tell tale also.

If it is slipping is it the the type of fix that requires taking it to a specific prop shop.?

Thank yoy

If the prop is slipping really bad, I've done the "see if you can turn it while in gear" trick. The problem is, you will need to keep an eye on the flywheel or something, to see if the prop is actually slipping, or if you are simply turning the engine.

Most any prop repair facility can repair a spun hub.

You noticed revs going higher when at idle or at wot rpm range ? If at idle, would you say that gear box slams noisier than before when geared, if so, need to re adjust idle screw CCW to a point that when geared again will hear a low noise soft gear engament. Don't turn idle screw too low or OB will die....re adjust as needed for that not to happen.

BTW, which 2-4 strokes OB is it ? Is it monitored with a digital or needle tach ?

That’s funny you said that ...I did notice it was louder than normal going into gear. Is it still a hub slipping or something else

For that to happen while gearing at idle rpm, hub must be so shot that will be possible to turn prop with bare hand easily. if it's not the case and the slamming when geared bothers reduce idle rpm a tad with idle screw. Reducing idle rpm should reduce tach rpm if in healthy working state. If not, tach has internal issues..

So, new hub did nothing. Engines some times revs bit higher at idle from were previously were adjusted to. Can be something as simple as the main idle screw has changed its resting idle position ?

So next move will be monitoring current tach revs with another tach in healthy state to rule out if it's a tach issue. If found OK, decrease a bit the main idle screw, all carbs in a row will lessen their fuel intake consequently lessening the dle rpm accordingly. Report your findings..
