Looking at a purchase of a 1995 Ranger Sport Pro. I would like to run the HIN# before buying it. The owner has no title for the boat as it is a project boat. So the question is where is the HIN# located, and will a bill of sale work for registration in NC since it was registered in NC back in 2010.

Just trying to cover the bases before instead of after.

Re: HIN# location

HIN is on the outside, upper starboard transom, 99% of the time.
It should also be under the dash/helm, and possible in the bilge area.

Don't know the laws for NC, generally speaking, from my dealings, if the boat was ever titled, anywhere, you had better have a copy of the signed title when you go to title and register it. And the name and signature on the title better match the name and signature on the registration card, AND on a bill of sale.

NC has a website that outlines all the boat registration and titling laws.

If the seller has no paperwork, he can't prove he has the authority to sell it, and neither can you, so you would be up a creek.

Tell the lazy seller to go get the paperwork in order, and then give you a call.
