Hinge pins on stern drive

I am in the process of removing my Volvo 270 stern drive to replace the bellows. I am stuck at the last process of the removal.

I have attached 2 pictures to help with my questions. Do I remove my hinge pins by punching them out, if so from outside to in? Manual states my need a special tool, so not sure if that is what i need.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Ya know, you only need to remove the upper gear box to change out the bellows.:) Leave the rest of the drive on the boat.

That is good to hear, can i ask a stupid question? is there a thread that explains how to just remove the upper gear box. Everything I have found, tells me to remove the drive.

You remove the lock screw and I believe on that drive the hinge pins get driven inward to remove. Personally I like to remove the whole drive that way I do not do anything to the gearbox that may cause a leak. I know many disagree, but I do not like opening them up if I don't have to.

Good luck and have a great day,

When you take your stern drive off, do you have the tool to hange the drive from the transom, do you use a engine hoist? I like both ideas, and agree with you, but i do not have the removal tool or engine hoist. So the gear box removal sounds better. I need to figure out what seals I need to replace, and help would be great.

Thanks for all the help, going to try to make my choice of which one this afternoon.

At a minimum, you'll need the two orings between the upper and intermediate, and the new bellows of course.

Personally I like to remove the whole drive that way I do not do anything to the gearbox that may cause a leak.

I agree it would be a bit easier to do with the drive removed. The upper is heavy for its size and the ujoints are floppy. But, once you've done it once, you can do it quite quickly. It's a personal preference thing I suppose.

I've never found it necessary to remove my whole drive. I like that about the older Volvo's.:)

OK, I removed the gear box, no issues, easier than i thought. I am going to go ahead and replace the u-joints while i have it off, and order the 2 o-rings. The bellows will be here tomorrow, so hope to have it back in the water by friday. I will keep everyone updated, and thanks for all the help, which is priceless.
