Hit something with prop, now it won't turn?

I couple of months ago I hit a object in the water that brought my boat to a real quick halt. I was in 30 feet of water but was later told that their were some rock piles where I was cruising and was likely the culprit. Anyways, the prop nor the shaft will spin with it in gear. It actually free spins in gear. Is there a gear or mechanisim that would likely break when hitting something and if so what? How difficult is it to take apart the lower unit and put back together to find the problem? The hub of the prop was not broken. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Trying not to spend a ton of money to get it back on the water!!

Ya think it might help if you told us what drive you have? Like what make (Merc, OMC, Volvo, Other) maybe the year and model of the drive, they are not all the same, and models change from year to year, and some even become extinct.

Do you have insurance? Most insurance policies will cover damage from striking submerged items.

Yeah I called my insurance company today and found out I only have liability! :| So i am back to finding a cheap way to fix it. I am very mechanically inclined but hesitant on taking apart the drive. I have heard it can be difficult to seal it back.

You might have blown your gears too.

Don't want to scare you, but regardless of what drive you have, it's usually big bucks to fix/replace things on a good hit.

Does your driveline have a guibo? Perhaps you simply ripped it.

Sometimes it pays to just take it to a pro to have it fixed. They have the tools, training, and experience. That's why they make "a ton of money".
