Hold throttle at control box

'79 Merc 150, original control box

As long as I have known this boat (~18yrs), the operator must hold the throttle lever to maintain speed or it will slowly walk its way back with the vibration of the boat. So if I get on plane, set my speed and let go of the throttle control, it will slow itself and probably lose plane. There is a speed that it will hold, but it is not very fast (~1/4 throttle).

Should the control hold its position on its own? If so, should I be looking at the control box or the other end of the linkage for adjustement?

Thanks

Re: Hold throttle at control box

I do not think there is any kind of friction setting on that control. Usually the throttle cables get dirty enough where they do not move too easy, and it is not an issue. Maybe you can tighten the throttle arm to add some friction.
