Well on my 1979 55 hp evinrude I was hooking up my tach, and got it to work, when all of a sudden I heard a whoosing sound, but my motor was still running. Shut down engine and went to check it out. After awhile of looking I see a hole in the side of the engine where the crankshaft ism right behind where the fuel pump is. I see pieces of metal that were sitting around it. Well I looked at the fuel mump good bcause this was directly in front of the now gaping hole, and saw that there was nothing that flew out. Then I checked the cover and there where no holes in the foam on the inside and no indentations. I picked up the metal pieces and they were very crumbally. They seemed to be very weak becasue I could roll them in my hand and they would break into pieces. So I know the engine will have to be torn down becaseu I see that some of the piecsfrom the outside are on the inside and I can't get them out with a thin pair of needle noses or tweezers. I'm thinking taht there was a weak spot in the casting, but I just don't know. Usually when you throw a rod or something it would create a big on hole. What do you all think caused this, and what the extent of the damage? Is it possible to fix a hole like this if I got someone to weld a patch? The engine was running great and I have no idea what the problem was. You think its fixable within not spending thousands of dolalr or now a lost cause? I figured I would tear down the head and replace the rings and check the pistons, what other things should I be looking for?
