Well on my 1979 55 hp evinrude I was hooking up my tach, and got it to work, when all of a sudden I heard a whoosing sound, but my motor was still running. Shut down engine and went to check it out. After awhile of looking I see a hole in the side of the engine where the crankshaft ism right behind where the fuel pump is. I see pieces of metal that were sitting around it. Well I looked at the fuel mump good bcause this was directly in front of the now gaping hole, and saw that there was nothing that flew out. Then I checked the cover and there where no holes in the foam on the inside and no indentations. I picked up the metal pieces and they were very crumbally. They seemed to be very weak becasue I could roll them in my hand and they would break into pieces. So I know the engine will have to be torn down becaseu I see that some of the piecsfrom the outside are on the inside and I can't get them out with a thin pair of needle noses or tweezers. I'm thinking taht there was a weak spot in the casting, but I just don't know. Usually when you throw a rod or something it would create a big on hole. What do you all think caused this, and what the extent of the damage? Is it possible to fix a hole like this if I got someone to weld a patch? The engine was running great and I have no idea what the problem was. You think its fixable within not spending thousands of dolalr or now a lost cause? I figured I would tear down the head and replace the rings and check the pistons, what other things should I be looking for?

I'll post a pic tommorrow. Do you think after tearing it all apart and checking connections, the hole would be able to be fixed with someone that welds? I figureed it would be hard to get a new block

Moon, I had a hole in my '58 fat fifty for years. It was there when I got it. Someone had epoxyed it shut. It worked fine.

In your case I suspect internal damage. Maybe some pieces of the filler blocks, if you have such a thing on that motor.

Uh-huh, and how fast were you revving it in neutral when it blew?

Re: Hole in the side of engine!

The tach said 500-600, however I was choosing the correct poles, so at one point it said 9000 rms. the engine countinued to run, however I shut it down quickly. There was no loud pop bang or boom. I was wondering on the epoxy thing, i bought some but decided I would disassemble to look at it closer. I think it was the camshaft becasue right by one of the things, it came close the exact spot it hit, I think it may have something to do wit hteh cam shaft. I haven't hit anything with the motor and all I did was pull the warm up lever up and then started it and I then noticed the sound. If the Camshaft hit it what woudl be the likely couase

Oops sorry crankshaft... I'm thinking maybe something broke off the piston and got caught between the crankshaft and the block.

Depends on what came loose inside and why and how much damage is inside. The crankcase can be repaired IF no critical areas were involved. No way to tell without tearing it down.

maybe the neighbors were taking shots at you and got a hit. you sunk my battleship!lol just messin with ya, yes a competant welder that is skilled at tig welding such as i am, should be able to fill the hole or patch it depending on the size of hole.but make it easy on the guy bring just that part of the case and clean it well with brake parts cleaner hell do the rest.

I'm at a loss on what came loose first. I doubt if you are going to find much to salvage. I would like to see a picture of the engine completely apart.

I'm betting a piece of one of the rings, skirt etc, got between the crank and case, and blew out the hole in the case.

Complete tear-down is next....

I'll agree with you on this. Something got caught and pushed it though.I was peering through the hole feeling liek a peeping tom, j/k the back of the piston is bent up bad from waht I can see. On these engince in the block it appears to be a sleeve. If it is a sleeve I will ahve to have it replaced, or do you have it bored out and put a larger piston in? And on the head, do you all think that is fixable trhough having an experinced person re work it and smooth it out?

I don't know, but this powerhead sounds like a total loss to me. I believe what I'd do is find another 55hp that ran fine and keep the hulk you have as a parts donor.

Rebuilding this powerhead, complete with hole in the crankcase, just sounds like throwing good money after bad, and I'm betting you can find a good-running 55 for less than it would cost to repair yours, plus you'd have a good lower unit, and many other parts that will probably come in handy.

I looked on my local Craigs List and there were several Johnson and Evinrude 55s for sale. Some of them were on boats, but that can often lead to a lower price overall, once you sell the boat. Plus, one that's on a boat can be water tested...a big plus for you.

I agree with CA; unless the motor has great sentimental value to you, it probably isn't going to be economical to fix. Nonetheless, you will have to do a teardown to see what's broken, and attempt to figure out why it happened.
