You got to read the spark plugs and base jet size on how they look. There is no magic foumula. If you are referring to the idle mixture it is best done with a vacuum gauge and the mixture screws ajusted to obtain maxium vacuum at idle.

Hmmm... ok :) If the sparkplugs are black, what does it mean? Too rich or too lean?

Alex

Do you have just a single air/gas adjustment screw?

No, there are 2 screws... 1 on the left and 1 on the right

Buttanic, the sparkplugs are black-grey with no oil on them (it's a brand new engine)

Re: Holley 2V tuning

With a new engine I would think the factory jetting would be optimal provided the carburator is working correctly. Usually jet changes are only needed when modifications have been made to increase preformance. Plug reading works best on new plugs. Put in a set of new plugs and without letting the engine idle for an excessive time run it at the speed you normally run at for at least 5 minutes than shut it down quickly without idling then look at the plugs. Do this on the water not on the trailer. It needs to be under load pushing the boat. In any case I would limit any jet changes to one size larger or smaller. Going too big will not cause engine damage, only poor performance but too small can cause major engine damage such as burning pistons. What is your reason for wanting to make changes?

Re: Holley 2V tuning

Only the base engine is new (GM 3.0 replacement engine), the carb is from the old engine (water in cylinders) - now i'm fine tuning the thing... The carb was untouched before i got hands on it - the screws were full painted, so noone messed with it till now. I had to take it apart cause there was sh** in it - looks like the engine was flooded through the carb (apparently a dead battery or bilge)
