Holley Carb Rebuild Question

I'm just finishing a rebuild of a Holley 4160 from my 89 Bayliner and I think I've messed up the Primary Metering block by letting it soak for 3 days.

This is my first rebuild and, though I took many pictures during the tear-down I don't have any that definitively show whether or not I've ruined it or not.

In any case, the overwhelming symptom that leads me to believe that it is toast is that I can "wiggle" the idle adjustment screws after I back them out 1.5 turns. (That can't be good.)

Holley has a replacement part 34-6 that appears to be identical to the block I have. It is described as a 4160 to 4150 conversion part and not as a 4160 Primary Metering Block replacement.

Does anybody know whether this part will work as the replacement for my goofed up metering block? I'm worried that there is a difference between the primary and secondary metering blocks in the "4150" series carburetors?

Re: Holley Carb Rebuild Question

soaking in carb cleaner for 3 days wont hurt it.
if you have the cork gaskets around the idle mix scews they will seal even though the screws wiggle.
most Holley carbs dont use air/fuel screws on the seconday but any carb with a metering block they can be added for 4 corner metering. totally usless in most applications.
what is your overwhelming symptom ?

Re: Holley Carb Rebuild Question

Thanks Rodbolt,

The original symptom was just a leaking fuel accelerator pump diaphragm.

I could likely have just fixed the leaking part since the engine, once started, was running quite well but part of the reason I picked up this "aged" boat was to cut my teeth, so to speak, and gain a deeper comfort level for marine repairs.

I've never rebuilt a carb and the timing seemed to be right for my schedule.

In your experience is it normal for the idle screws to wiggle?

Re: Holley Carb Rebuild Question

Just a follow-up:

I contacted Holley's support line and they confirmed that the metering block was bad.

They also confirmed that they do not sell replacement primary metering blocks for the carb.

I've purchased a Proform 67166C Billet Metering Block and, with a bit of cutting and grinding adjustment to the accelerator pump tube that runs between the carb main body and the metering block I'm back in business.

I'll be crossing my fingers and putting the assembled carb back on the engine this week.
