i have been working on a 7.5 hp 1955 evinrude and today i started it. Started with only a few pulls! So she's not running great and i have more work to do but at least i know it will start - and that is encouraging. I put 2oz/gallon of seafoam in the gas tank (which is mixed 1/24) and sprayed some in the carb too. I ran it in a trash can and it had good water spary from the lower unit and the head did not get too hot. I did not put it in gear in that little trash can.
now the problems-
The throttle advance is wrong. I think i put the ignition plate (thing with the coils) on incorrectly because the cam follower only goes half-way down the cam. if that makes any sense - centered the 2 lines on the ignition plate withe the carb and bolted the cam on - to clarify: when the throttle is turned all the way down the cam follower is still in the middle of the cam - so the engine does not slow down enough or stop that way. how do i fix this?
then i need to synchronize it: any advice?

is that enough sea foam or should i use more concentrated to really clean the carbon?

seafoam does not clean carbs, i keeps clean carbs clean, it breaks up the carbon build up in the mechanical guts. clean and rebuild the carbs. suggest and impeller very soon.

yeah thats what i meant with the seafoam - cleaning the cylinders, pistons, ect. i rebuilt the carb before i started it and soaked it all in carb cleaner. what about the cam situation?

I don't see any way you could possibly have put it together wrong unless you've invented a new way. This is how it should look from the bottom. Of course there is a very limited amount of in and out adjustment but nothing like you describe.

EDIT: I don't know, will the link and arm fit the other set of two holes?

i will have to look. that looks like what i did. how far down the cam does is the cam follower supposed to go? and why would it rev faster in the middle than at full throttle? is that a carburetor adujstment thing?

If you want the SeaFoam to be effective, put the whole can in a gallon of premix ... 2 oz doesn't do squat.

I don't think you could get it to run if the armature plate wasn't on right, and also if it matches up to the screw holes and connects to the armature advance lever, it pretty much has to be on right. I think you've got a linc-n-sync problem and possibly a problem with your throttle gears being misaligned. Is the little square gear ear in the square slot on the gears at the bottom of the tiller handle? also, how do your gears match up on the side of the cowl? If they're not right, it won't let your armature plate go through the full range of travel. If it does go through it's full range of travel, it has to push the throttle cam all the way.
Just some ideas to try,

I don't know how much you had apart. But any chance you put the throttle roller/lever assembly on backwards? It seems that one of our members recently had a problem very similar recently. Only his problem was more that the roller ran off the end of the cam at wot. But then since your lu is frozen up maybe you haven't been able to advance the throttle that far yet. Just another thought. Carry on!

I've seen the vertical throttle shaft/lever twisted before. The one that goes between the gears and armature plate link. Rare, but it can happen. Other possibility that I think Tash touched on is the gears are not "timed" correctly, i.e. first tooth in first groove.
