I have a prop that is to beat up to have fixed so I was thinking could zi fire up the plazmacutter and slice off part of the blades. Dont need a prop for dyno just trying to keep water in the tank. Would this be stupid

Re: home made test prop

If I am not mistaken, a real test prop is designed to give a certain rpm in a tank, so that basic tuneup parameters can be set. Each engine has its own test prop and it has to be specifically set up for that engine.

I see two problems with your plan. One is that you won't be able to accurately mimic what a test prop does, by cutting your prop via "guesstimation." The other is that it is important for the prop to remain properly balanced. Cutting your blades "by eye," is not going to allow you to maintain the same amount of material on each blade, and that will result in an imbalanced prop.

I bought my test prop on e-bay for a reasonable price...I suggest doing the same if you want accurate results.

Anyone have a picture of a test prop? I have no idea what one looks like. Rick.

Cutting your prop down is a bad idea. It will only mimic running with no prop at all, causing serious over revving. A real test prop has blades that force water outward against a ring. The idea is similar to trying to pick up a chair while sitting in it.

Even then, it has to be used in a suitable test tank. They stir up an awful lot of commotion in the water, depending on the horsepower. A hundred snarling horses in a 55 gallon drum just doesn't get it.
