So I am going to attempt to make a homeade surfgate this week and run some testing with it on Saturday, since it will be warm. The main goal I am looking for is to make the wave a little longer. I read throught the entire wakeworld post and this seems to be a somewhat easy way to extent how far back you can surf, especially for me with a direct drive boat. I am thinking about 10 inches or so high and 22 inches or so long. Thinking of using a thick rubber mat like a horse stall mat for the gate. Any ideas or suggestions for me before I get this started, and yes I will be posting pics and videos.

Jason,

I looked at a few pics online in regards to construction and design...in lieu of the horse mat, look into polyethylene cutting board material?

Pretty stout stuff and very user/marine friendly!

I thought about using that at first but have no freaking clue where to find it around here lol. Maybe I will take another look and see if I can find some. I figured something rigid for sure, but was going to try to stay away from just wood. Shoot, maybe I should just use some wood for the first run .

obviously its just a test version of my "gate," We are going to get the boat out on Saturday and see if it makes a difference of not.

Re: Homeade surfgate

I have been looking on building a DIY surf gate as well. I was wondering if anyone knew a way to be able to remove this because I would also like to do other sports behind it such as wakeboarding and skiing. If this idea is already removable, then ignore this reply :p

Thanks!

To take the gate off? Ya man, mine takes like 10 seconds. Undo the ratchet strap. I don't want anything permanent either because we tube and wakeboard a lot also.

I like, and because it's so "exposed" it's easy to replace when it rots...BTW, looks really redneckish?! Yee-Haw!

*Not to offed any fellow iboater's that might also use redneck construction for some things marine related. I would venture to say most of us have "rigged" something to make it work quickly!

If you could email me the instructions to make this, that would be awesome. Just message me and I will be glad to give you my email.

Thanks!

Tell ya what? Lemme try it out in case it's complete crap and needs some changed and then I will let you know dimensions and such. Pretty simple design, just made out of scrap wood laying around the house. I'm taking the boat out tomorrow and will keep ya updated.

Re: Homeade surfgate

Welp, got to get the boat out and get the "masongate," tested out and get some surf time in. As far as the gate, it seemed to make quite a difference in the height of the wave, really cleaned up the face, but did not accomplish what I really wanted, and that was to push the pocket further back and get some more push out of it. We still had the best luck and the most push about 6 inches away from my swim deck, lol. Though is makes it kinda scary, it did have a ton of push right there. The wave did for sure get much larger and cleaner. I think part of the problem was all of the spray coming over the top of the "gate," and the length of the actual "gate." I am going to work this week on the "masongate," 2.0 and see how we can improve on it. Thought it was a slight success I would like to see much better results from it. We did play with our weight A LOT! And the best wave came from much less weight in our boat. We have been running 2 750's stacked on top of one another in the back surf corner. This has given us a somewhat dirty yet surfable wave. We ran an 800 tube sack straight accross the rear and maybe 200 lbs extra on the surf side with the gate. We tried filling the 750 on the surfside and listing the boat as usual and it completely destroyed the wave, so the gate definitely works in that fashion. Running only 1 sac would be awesome for us! We also have only been out surfing maybe 10 times each, so dont mind the rope in our hands, since we are still beginning riders. I will get some pics up of the wave pre-gate and with gate for you guys to check out, and any suggestion are more than welcome!! Thanks!

Dont mind my buddy eating it in the back of the wave, but this gives a decent idea of how pretty the wave is with the gate. I think if the gate is longer it will make a good difference, since the water wasnt diverted to much from its original position. Also notice all the spray coming over it on the non surf side. That will be fixed in version 2.0. Since its kinda hard to tell, this wave was at least waist high, but not a ton of push until you got very close to the boat.

video of wave pre-gate. Give it a minute to "form." The wake is much taller with the gate and the top lip is MUCH cleaner. I will get a pic up here of the wave pre-gate from the same camera position as soon as i can boot my little one off the other computer.

one more pic of the wave with the gate, with a rider on it, maybe give you guys a visual of how clean and high the wave was.

Thanks so much for all of this! I really appreciate it. If you dont mind, once you finish the 2.0 version, do you mind sending instructions on how to build it? If you can that would be fantastic!

Thanks again!

Oh ya, I will put the dimensions on here no problem once I get a good one going. It made quite a difference but I think it can do much better.

Re: Homeade surfgate

Jason, I have only seen surfing at behind a V-Drive/DD boat...the video looks like you're going a little too fast? Might just be because there's no one on the wave? Typically, don't you surf at like 5-?mph?
