I have a Shakespeare classic something or other about 8 foot fiberglass whip antenna that someone gave me ....they cut the coax about 5 inches from the base of the whip, I do not just wanna put a connector on and add a section of wire, that would open everything up to corrosion .........I know a little about antenna making, from the am radio days, but can I actually make a 5/8 wave dipole antenna and re-install inside the whip ?? I was thinking the wire needs to be about 43 1/8 and the braided pulled back the down the wire in the opposite direction....

Is this correct, before anyone spouts off just go buy another antenna I would like to see if this works first

I would think a good splice to the remnant of the coax would be easier than doing what you propose.

3.73 feet for a 5/8 verticle is what I got. That's using 156.8mhz as your center point.

Assuming my dipole calculator is correct on my phone. I can't remember the formula off the top of my head for a 5/8 dipole. I'll have to look it up when I get home.

I know I know, I'm a general class, I should have that memorized.....

I agree. A good splice and a piece of adhesive lined shrink tubing would do the trick.
