Taking off on the "sinker sale" thread, I would like to hear how others make cheap, quick and dirty, saltwater jigs & lures. Kind of like the old pop top lures. For you young ins, pop tops used to come off the can and you could put 5/10 on a line with hooks and it made a fairly decent bait jig. You could also throw them on the ground so your kids could cut their feet on them.

Hmmm, I thought you were supposed to put the pull tabs back into the beer can so when you chugga-lugged the beer the tab would wash back into your throat and choke yourself to death  But then again, I might be mistaken :D

I've seen guys make "Wahoo Bombs" by painting a 3-4 oz trolling sinker (eye on both ends), attaching a open eye 6/0 or bigger hook (crimped) and wrapping a price of self stick mylar skirt to the middle of the sinker. Buying the supplies might set you back a bit, but after that they are cheap to make. Sling that sucker out there and grind it back as fast as possible,,, never fished wahoo, but heard it's a blast.

I make my own striper lures. It's not cheap or quick, but better than spending $30-40 for a 12" lure.

when my son was around 9, he decided he was gonna make his own version of a fishing spoon. He took a teaspoon out to the shop and cut the handle off, drilled a hole in the top and used some epoxy to mount a 2/0 hook. He went down to the seawall and caught about a 25lb tarpon on it that day.

I tie my own bucktail jigs. The best combo is a red head, white tail, and red mylar. I bought the mylar at walmart in the xmas section that's labeled as tinsel. It was $1 for more than I think I'll ever use. So far I've caught spanish macs, trout, reds, ladyfish, sharks, pinfish, black sea bass, blues, pompano, jacks, and even the dreaded sail cats on them. Total cost for each jig is about 30 cents. Not bad in my book

I mainly tie them on 1/4 oz but I also tie 2,3, and 4 oz for grouper and such. I'll try to get some pics on here

Re: homemaid lures

I have made my own trolling rigs for ballyhoo for years. Instead of dressing them with an Islander or Sea Witch, I make my own attractors with Christmas Tree tinsel and old cast net weights.

I run mine on 65 or 93 lb singlestrand wire with a 4/0 primary hook and a 4X strength treble hook as a stinger.

I leave a pin in front of the primary hook and use small rubber bands to secure the 'hoo to the rig after threading the hook through the belly of the bait.

Kings, Tuna, Wahoo and Dolphin tear them up!

I've also made high speed trolling lures with storebought skirts. For those, I use 10cc industrial syringe tubes to center a brass tube. Fill with colored epoxy resin (with glitter or whatever), then when cured cut a couple flats on one end and hot glue on doll eyes (from Wal-mart, etc). Put the whole concoction in a 30cc syringe and encase in clear epoxy. After it cures. hit the end on a sanding wheel to cut a groove to secure the skirt, add heavy fluoro leader and a hook, and drag it at 25 kts on the run out to the fishing grounds.

I've caught some nice fish trolling with the boat planed off :D
