I'm going to buy an 18' Lund in the spring and plan to put a 115 4 stroke on it. What do you recomend, Honda or Yamaha? The Honda is heavier, will that mean slower? Is a 115 big enough?

Re: Honda 115 or Yamaha 115

I am in a similar situation but purchasing a 19ft Polar Deep V. The standard power package comes with a 115 yamaha 4 stroke but I will probably end up spending another 2,500 sheckles for the new yamaha 150 hp 4 stroke upgrade.

I have Honda motors on some power equipment and am pleased with the performance but from what I understand their 4 stroke outboard motors are very HEAVY. What I can't understand is that if Honda is the guru of 4 stroke outboard power then why haven't they done anything about making their motors lighter?

Yamaha's 4 stroke technology has been developed to the point where the motors are more coparable in weight to two strokes in the same hp range and in some cases even lighter. For example: I may be off by a few numbers but I believe the new 150hp four stroke weighs in at 466lbs and the 150 HPDI 2 stroke weighs in around 472lbs. Compare this with the closest Honda that offers 20 less ponies at nearly 500lbs.

Kevin

You should check out the 140 hp Suzuki/Johnson 4 strokes with EFI ( Suzuki makes them for Johnson. Check out this link. http://suzukimarine.com/4strokes/compadvan.jsp?mn1=DF140. I have a 70 hp Suzuki 4stroke and have been extreemly pleased. I've heard the 140's are awesome engines. Better power to weight compared to the Honda.

lots of hondas and yamahas here by the gulf of mexico. one thing i have found quite noticable is that the hondas alwasy have signs of corrosion by the lower units. could be that the hondas have been around longer, cant really tell. can add that i have an yamaha 80 h.p. 4 stroke and it runs like a charm. like others i cant figure out why the hondas are so heavy! regards fred.

The Honda will be about 100 lbs heavier, and quite a bit larger physically. Also more expensive. I think it lacks some of the Yamaha's features, like fresh water flush, etc.

I own some F115's and they are truly some of the best outboards ever. Real sweethearts. I can't imagine why you would want the Honda.

I put a Johnson 115 4-stroke on my 18.5 glass boat and am very pleased with it. The Honda 115/130's weigh the same. Take a look here at what engines people are having issues with before you buy. Good luck with your new rig.

I was talking to a marine police while on vacation. THey use whalers as patrol boats and originally had Hondas on them, very quiet and smooth, but they couldn't get out of there own way. They switched to conventional 2-strokes (Johnsons) because they weren't able to chase down many boats with the Hondas. Too heavy.
