Hello I have a 1995 170 SSV that I need to repower. It has a 150 HP max rating. I found a used 2001 Honda 130 but am concerned about the weight wich is right at 500 lbs. Could someone advise me as to whether this is too heavy for my boat? Also, will this engine perform ok?

Thank you.

The boat is designed to handle it, and after all, the I/O engines of the same hull weigh as much if not more.

However, one factor people take into consideration when buying outboards is to SAVE weight, which you will not be doing if you get the Honda. The 130 hp Evinrude E-TEC weights 390 lbs, for a savings of 110 lbs. The E-TEC 150 weighs 418 lbs, saving 82 lbs from the Honda, despite being much more powerful. Mercury Optimax might offer similar weight savings over the Honda.

That's an unnecessary extra ~100 pounds you're hauling around for the life of the boat, cutting into your fuel efficiency, passenger capacity, and towing vehicle efficiency.

Thank you so much for that response. My problem is that I want a newer 150hp 2stroke but cant find one for sale.....anywhere!

Does anyone have a reputable source for used outboards?

You may find one, but trouble is they rarely come on the market alone, they are almost always sold with the boat they came on.

This being August you might find some good deals on a new one, with free rigging thrown in, extended warranty, etc., but I realize that can still be an expensive proposition despite incentives!

Best new V6 deal right now is Evinrude's new 135 HO, which is a slightly detuned 150, for a lower retail price than the 150. Way more torque than the Honda 130.

If you don't need a 50 mph boat the E-TEC 115 is a nice engine, would probably push your boat to 44-46 mph.
