I have a 2004 20hp with electric start and trim, last year I didn't really use the boat but a couple of times and this year I was having to use starter fluid to get it started. I changed the plugs and oil but was still having to use starter fluid to get it started, once started it ran and started back up fine. A few weeks ago, I was out on the river and the motor just stopped, no coughing sputtering or knocking, it just died. The motor would turn over but wasn't firing or even tried to for that matter and had to be towed back in. I'm still having this same problem, any suggestions on what might be wrong would be great!

Re: Honda 20HP

I have same engine (2006) that I purchased used. Had same issue (needed starting fluid, stalling). Took carb off, disassembled, found full of rust and junk - as if prev owner had run off of a rusty metal gas tank. I soaked and tried clearing the passage ways, but ended up putting on a new carb (approx $200 part). Runs great. I suspect carb has gummed up on you - only real fix is to diss, soak and clean. After it is fixed, consider:
-draining carb bowl it it is going to sit for more than a few weeks
-use ethanol gas treatment and stabilzer with each tank to keep gas from gumming
- I also installed a racor water seperator filter ($80 ?) on the gas line
