What is the SB#56 update to the Honda BF225, I have not heard anything about it? Is it something done under warranty?

Re: Honda 225?

Its a Service bulletin that upgrades the oil pan gasket and the exhaust piping on later model year engines - the newer engines 2007 and after should have it factory. There was an issue with water getting sucked into the exhaust which could cause anything from simple 02 sensor failure, spark plugs getting seizes into the block to entire engine failure. it should be covered if your engine is under warranty. A few people on the forum seems to have had issues with it.

Its was amplified by engines being mounted too low therefore exhaust ports being too low to the water line. But not everyone will have the problem - its still probably a good idea to replace if its under warranty even if your not having isuess YET.
These are affected serial #'s.

Re: Honda 225?

Thanks for you answer. I called Cap Sante Marine and spoke with the yard mngr and he pulled the bulletin and he said it is a big job and Honda is not doing anything with the motors that do not have problems. My motor is mounted high on my transom, (could not go any higher w/o a jack plate) I am mounted at the top of the engine mounting holes. I had to go that high to correct a proposing problem, along with a transom lifting 4 blade Power Tech prop.
I have it documented w/ the installer in case something should come up and I still have 3 1/2 years of warranty.
I goggled the bulletin and found a lot of info over on another forum.

Re: Honda 225?

i'd push to have it done. its really a design flaw. honda hasn't been really forthcoming about it. if my 225 was under warranty, i'd be pushing pretty hard for them to fix it.

as it is, i'll hopefully be doing it in my driveway this week.

Re: Honda 225?

Yep ......my 2003 BF 200 was fixed under SB#56.

The Washington Dealer/Installer of this engine was out to lunch.

Engine was buried.....the exhaust was only about 3 inches above the water linebesides putting the wrong shaft engine ...........my engine is a 25' shaft ......should be a 30' shaft.

Ended up with a seized plug.........they found the SB#56 and Honda redid exhaust and I raised my engine to the highest bolt....

SB#56 was an Exhaust mod to prevent water from backing up into the engine.

Your exhausts should be atleast 6 inches out of the water.......per Honda.

Re: Honda 225?

I have talked with the installer and have it on record. My motor is mounted about 10-12 inches up from the water line so I don't expect any problems, but good to know and watch out for any problems.
Thanks for the replies.
