Honda 50 gear crunch

Hi,

I have a 2003 Honda 50 and have some concerns over the gear selection.

Sifting into forward is fine and smooth but when shifting into reverse it always crunches before engaging.

There are no problems with it jumping out of gear in forward or reverse.
I've checked the remote cable adjustment and it seems fine.
According to the Honda tacho the idle speed is just under 1000rpm (manual specifies 900-1000)
When I select a gear I make sure that the boat is stationary, the revs have dropped back down to idle and I move the lever quickly and positively.

Could wear on the dogs cause them to grind over each other more than usual before engaging???

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Bump

Any help would be much appriated.

When searching the forum before starting this thread I only came across cases where worn dogs caused it to jump out of gear.

Is it possible that worn dogs could also cause them to grind against each other before locking together?

Cheers

More likely is that you have a misadjustment at the shift shaft coupler. This can be a little delicate and require some trial and error if that coupler has been disturbed ie a water pump job.It sounds like you are not far off the mark and perhaps a quarter turn at that locknut may help you.

Hondon,

Many thanks for your response.

I'll try some fine tuning of the shift shaft coupler. It's helpfull to know that it is delicate and requires fine adjustment.

Thanks again.
