hey guys whats up? ok... they say that the 50 hp honda has over head cam, but in this case of engine it would basically be sideways right? i want to know how the camshaft is drivin on the mid-range horsepower engines, rather than the belt driven camshaft on the lower horsepower engines. so what im asking you guys is do they use a belt on the outside?, or some kind of cam gears on the inside of the engine?. anybody who knows this can you please reply back to me, im trying to get myself more well educated with these fourstrokes because i soon want to be the owner of one! thanks guys, you guys are awesome

There's an external timing belt on the top of the engine, driven by the crankshaft pulley, that turns the camshaft pulley. The belt, pulleys, and tensioner are under a cover so they may not be real obvious, but they're there.

thanks for the reply man, but it boggles my mind why they would use an external part (such as a belt) rather than an in ternal part (such as a cam gear) like isnt this belt more likely to fail? why would they use it?

The belts have been exposed (somewhat) in cars for years. The marine environment is a lot easier on belts than automotive.

There is not nearly as much heat in a marine application.

Internal drive of an OH cam would make the engine a lot heavier, too.
