I'm replacing the impeller on my Honda 9.9 4 stroke. How do I disconnect the gear shift rod at the lower unit? Do I have to tear apart the whole shaft or just the lower unit at the oil level?
Does anybody have any pictures that show how to do this?
Thanks in advance for all your help.

Re: Honda 9.9 4 stroke impeller repair

Firstly put motor in reverse then halfway down leg remove collar with 4 bolts, you will now see shift rod with 2 nuts the small one being a locknut which you slacken half turn, then slacken larger nut till you part shift rod.

You then remove 4 bolts that hold housing at bottom, and finally 1 last bolt under cavitation plate,if corroded it might need gentle tapping with a mallet, make sure lower part doesnt drop on you, maybe better to leave one of the 4 bolts above cavitation plate till last.

Re: Honda 9.9 4 stroke impeller repair

Not too long ago, I did the impeller repair/replace job on my Honda 15, 4 stroke. I bet that "Under the Hood", the 9.9 looks a lot like a 15. So if a shop manual would help, Private Message me and I can probably help out...
