Hey all Honda BF90 Owners:

I'm looking at buying a 2001 Honda BF90 on a 22' pontoon. It's been used in salt water, and appears to be very well taken care of, and has about 150 hours on it.

I am curious about your experiences with this engine. Any problems or issues you may have experienced? So far it appears there have been some hesitation issues on a fast acceleration.

Thanks

Re: Honda BF 90 Reliability?

Take the boat out & run it , Must tack at 6000 RPMs. Should run 27.8 MPH at 5800 RPMs. Have the motor checked out & find out If there is a (GOOD) Honda service center thats close to you. Very important...........
If the trailer has carpet on the runners, And used in salt water, Look AT & inspect the bottom of the PONTOONS, BEING USED IN SALT WATER, There could be a problem there . I Love our PONTOON / & when the issue's are resolved , I will love My HONDA, GOOD LUCK

Re: Honda BF 90 Reliability?

weltiro - A buddy of mine has a BF90 of about the same vintage as you're looking at, but his is run 100% in sea water and has about 2000 hours on it. It has always taken him out and brought him home, without fail. He only has the one motor, no kicker, and out here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, that's the kind of reliability you need to have. It has run flawlessly with one exception and that was a faulty ECU at about 1500 hours, but the motor still ran, just not smoothly. Got him home though. He has it serviced regularly by a certified Honda technician but other than that does nothing special. It still looks good too.

Check the service records for the motor you're looking at - has it been regularly serviced by qualified folks? Never been submerged or anything? Engine and leg oil clean/fresh - not black and old? Starts easily and runs smoothly and easily from idle through WOT (5000-6000rpm)? If all yes, and the price suits you, should be good to go.

Good luck.

Just spoke with my buddy who owns the BF90. I stand corrected. His motor is 10 years old and has in excess of 3300 hours on it. I think that's a pretty solid indication that the BF90 should be reliable enough for you as long as you service it periodically.
