I have a Honda BF15A outboard Serial Number BAAL 1404128 Year 2000. Whilst installing the bottom plug I cross-threaded the Head on the engine. Can this be re-threaded for a larger plug or can I insert a heli-coil or do I need to replace the head.

Re: Honda BF15A

I expect it can be heli-coiled.

One note to prevent future occurrences: When installing a spark plug, always put it in with fingers only, then tighten it with fingers to finger-tight. Finish by torquing the plug to spec.

You cannot crossthread a plug using your fingers...it won't turn. On autos, where plugs may be less accessible, I use a short length of rubber hose to hold the plug, but always use my fingers to turn the plug in until it's finger-tight.

My father, a pro mechanic for over 50 years, taught me that trick and insisted that I do that all the time I worked in his shop. I never cross-threaded a single plug.

I would try a thread chaser first, unless you really buggered it up. There is another method called Time-Sert, but don't know if you would have across the big blue.
http://www.timesert.com/

Re: Honda BF15A

THANKS FOR YOUR ADVISE, I'LL GO FOR THE HELI-COIL AND LET YOU KNOW HOW IT WORKS OUT. I APPRECIATE THE TIP ON TIGHTENING THE PLUGS IN FUTURE.
REGARDS FROM CO.CLARE, IRELAND.
