Hi...

I have a little Honda 15 horse, 4-stroke which stalls when I shift from Neutral to FWD or REV. It's running new gas with about 1/3 oz StaBil in a 3 gallon tank, new plugs, new fuel filter. I'm told it's a 2007 model BF15D5SHTA

It starts just fine at the pier, like it's gonna run just fine. It will sit there and idle forever, or rev up with no hesitation when I twist the throttle, but as soon as I shift to FWD or REV, it sputters and stalls. Starts right back up again and will idle just fine till I shift... then it stalls. After about three or four iterations of this, it will take off and run the rest of the day like it never had a problem. I can run the lake, stop and fish for an hour, then start her up and run her like normal. The little engine will plane the 14 foot JonBoat in a heartbeat. No problems after that first embarassing evolution at the pier.

Hope there's a simple solution like a fuel additive to clean the carb, or maybe someone has had the same problem and can tell me how to solve it.

Thanks in advance...

It is very likely that your idle is set too slow. These engines need to idle at 900 .It is also concievable that you have a faulty choke cable or mechanism.

My 8HP BF8A had a somewhat similar problem, except mine was tough to start unless it was throttled up a bit too high. I cleaned the carb, and found the low speed (pilot) jet was clogged. After cleaning it with a thin copper wire strand and more carb cleaner and an air jet, it seems to shift into gear and stay running. Only tested in garbage can of water so far, but it seems OK.
