Well im new here and not really clued up on this but its just to try and help my dad out.

His Honda BF50 was recently submerged in water, since then it started once and now nothing. The mechanical side of things all seem to be ok fuel getting to the plugs its under compression but no life.

It seems like there could be a problem with the electrics, we tried to test the rectifier and the cdi and they both seem to be bad, not sure how good our tester is. If the rectifier is bad would that cause the engine not to start, we don't seem to be getting any spark at the plugs either. Maybe the exciter coil is bad?

Any ideas suggestions would be great

thanks

You are going to need to test all your electrical components and replace the ones that no longer work. It may be easier to find a motor that is blown and buy a whole new wiring harness with CDI, etc. Only other thing I could think would be to unplug everything and try blowing out any water that may be sitting in the plugs and try it before you spend the money.

First question would be, Fresh or Saltwater and how long submerged?...No need to replace electricals if all bearings are corroded...

Re: Honda BF50 Submerged now not working

Thanks for your replies,

There is no water sitting inside the engine, and it did start for about 15 minutes after we cleaned the fly wheel up but then smoke came off one of the charging coils and then stopped working, maybe there was an electrical fault that caused the charging coil to overheat.

The engine was in saltwater, maybe submerged for a maximum of 24 hours all the carb's have been cleaned and checked the engine hasn't seized up, it turns over fine but just no spark makes me think could be something like the charging coil, exciter coil or worse like the CDI etc. Cant see the exciter coil being damaged because its completely sealed.

Think we are going to need a DVA no way of testing anything with just a normal voltage, continuity or current tester is there? Well the continuity will be handy.
