I am taking off a 40hp merc and putting a Honda 90hp on my pontoon. The question I have is there an adapter that will plug the Mercury gauges into the Honda wiring harness? the boat is a 1999 Suntracker Pontoon.

Thanks

Re: Honda to Merc gauge adapter

There is no adapter that I know of. If you have a trim gauge, it will not work with the Honda.

Normally, on Trackers, if you find the purple, black and grey wires coming from the gauges, they come down to a connector. You will probably have to cut the wires between the connector and the gauge set.

If you have the official Honda wiring harness, there should be some spare leads at the end of the harness. The black (Honda harness) connects to the black in the gauge set. The Black/yellow (Honda harness) connects to the purple in the gauge set. The grey (Honda harness) connects to the grey in the gauge set.

Normally, the lights for the gauges are already connected to the nav light switch on the dash...so you should not have to do anything about that.

Re: Honda to Merc gauge adapter

So the gauges on the tracker will work fine with the Honda? Would be much easier. I would like to replace the water pressure gauge with the trim gauge? Do I need the pressure gauge since the Honda has the warning buzzers on it for water?

Thanks,

Re: Honda to Merc gauge adapter

I do not like to make general statements...it depends on the gauges that you have...

-A voltmeter will work with anything.

-A tachometer may or may not work depending on the vintage. Most of the more current tachs have a setting on the back of it to correspond to the engine. Look at the back and see if you can see what manufacturer it is. It probably is a teleflex. If so, the setting is 2P...it may also be marked 4C.

-As for the water pressure gauge...you have to drill a hole and tap the water passage cover to connect a water pressure gauge. It all depends how mechanical you are and if you have the proper tap. This gauge is always good to have. It your water pressure is declining, you will know you are about to have trouble before an overheat happens...that is, if you watch the gauge (most people don't).

-If you have any other gauges, list them and I will let you know.

Re: Honda to Merc gauge adapter

thanks you are a big help unclemike. Ok, I have factory harness and am hooking the motor up right now. Every thing has hooked right into the factory plug except the trim switch on the controller. Don't know if I mentioned this but it is the side flush mount controll with the trim switch in the handle. I cannot find the connector. i do however find a three prong connector with the white grey blue colored wires just like coming off the trim switch. The white is hot. Also, when I turn on the key switch, will I hear any noise out of the ignition?

thanks
