Got an ancient Chrysler(1970) and the foam around the inside of the hood has totally deteriorated. Any suggestions as to what I should use to replace it with.

Re: Hood insulation

There are insulation kits on the market at the boat stores. They are foam and foil construction and glue to the inside of the cowling.
There are outboard kits.

You could try this..This mixable foam expands 30-1. Fill the cowling and let it do it's thing. Then trim out excess foam til it fits your engine.

Foam

Re: Hood insulation

Does anyone have any experiance with new insulation and possibly web address's for new ones?

I'd like to quieten down my outboard.. it currently has no insulation at all inside the cover..

Its a 100HP Johnson V4 and its noisy as hell..

If I can limit that abit with some really good insulation. (something better then the fiberglass rubbish that was in it before.) it would really increase the level of enjoyment of my boating.

I am rebuilding the rear seat so that it sits over the edge of the well and the back of the seat will block alot of the noise.. but the more I can block, the happier I will be.

any tips'd be great.

rgds

Franki

Re: Hood insulation

If I'm not mistaken, some types of insulation will attract moisture. Something you definitely do not want to do in salt water. Any suggestions?

Re: Hood insulation

Some good info posted but, don't forget that you have to factor in the temp inside the hood. I don't know exactly what it is but, my thermostat is set at 163 deg.

Re: Hood insulation

I am headed to Walmart and am going to try to find one of those pads that campers use to protect their sleeping bag from the ground. I have tried the foil stuff, very expensive, in the past and now I see manufacturers using the less expensive, but probably more effective at suppressing noise, foam being used. I plan to install in my Mercury 115. Let you know next summer.
