Hooking up controls

Will be installing a 1971 500E this weekend. (my first Merc). Is it best to place the engine and shift control in forward gear when installing and adjusting the shifter? I don't seem to see a specific neutral location on the shift slider in the engine.<br /><br />Thanks, Mike

Mike, Slide the engine shifter until it puts the lower unit into neutral. Is should "click" in and stay there. Now put the merc control into neutral. It should also "click" in and stay there. Now adjust the barrel on the shift cable until you can put the cable end onto the shift slide.
