Hooking up my Mercury O/B

Hello all,

I have just purchased an '82 Boston Whaler Outrage 18. Everything on the boat works great, but it REALLY needed to be rewired, because when the seller showed it to me, the a wire for the trim melted (tiny wire spliced in to make length). Also, the center console looked like a birds nest of wiring, and they were running multiple accessories (GPS, Radio, Lights, livewell pumps, etc) and the motor off the same battery.

SOOOO, the problem now is, I don't know how the motor wiring back up. I've relocated the starting batteries back close to the motor, and those will be just for starting, and then a separate system for all the accessories. It's an '82 Mercury 150hp outboard, and it looks like it was poorly rewired once already. I mainly need to know any information on hooking up trim controls correctly. And I'll warn you, I'm an idiot when it comes to motors, so bear with me. Any help would be great!

Thanks,
Steve

Below is a picture of what I'm dealing with here, haha

Well, you may wire the boat accessories any way you like. usually you pull a +12VDC and ground from the battery to a fuse panel, and wire all the boat stuff thru a master accessory switch. At least that is how I do it.

Run the boat's gauges only off the purple(+12VDC) and black engine(Ground) harness wires. Grey is for tach, yellow/red is starter solenoid, red is +12VDC (unswitched/usually unfused), yellow/black is choke solenoid; black/yellow is ignition killer wire. Blue is trim up; Green is trim down.

Thanks! I was just confused because all the wires that (I think) were for the trim were hooked into some relay or plug looking things in the center console, wasn't sure what those were and if I'll need to get more, or just hook trim wires from the controls directly to trim (maybe fuse them at some point in the system??). I'm completely lost when it comes to wiring.

The MESS looks like add ons from guages and radios etc.
Your actual wiring harness isin't in the pic.
Wire ties and electrical tape will help cut the confusion.
Grab a wire and trace it back and put a piece of tape with name or description on it.
Most Mercs have plug in connectors for the T/T look starting at the controls and trace the wires.
