i have an J90PLEEB 1999 90 hp johnson...it has the new type plugs to hook up to controls....i recieved this motor disassembled....have rebuilt and bought 2003 omc controls for it.. everything else is hooked up , but for initial start up i need an rpm guage... i have the typical "tiaga" (ithink) its called rpm guage.....but my question is...

the labeled rpm plug from the controls is a 6 din (orange(front) ) plug.... but my guage doesnt have this connection obviously .. do i need an adapter ? or is there another simpler way of conecting this ? which wires do i use and to where? thank for your help when i find this out ... i will commence with the intial start up and break in.........and report my findings

Re: hooking up rpm guage

Buzo, Some of the wiring harnesses have both types of connectors for the Tach. The six pin connector is for the "System Check" type Tach which has warning LEDs for low oil, no oil, engine overheat and no gas, in addition to the RPM readout. If you are not going to use that type of tach, look for three ring terminals covered in plastic. These will be on the purple, grey and black wires. These will operate a regular (non system check) tach.

Yes, look for the three wires. Your tach is probably a "Faria".
